Can you describe your role and what you do in one sentence?
We provide a platform for consumers to review online dating sites and dating apps. What makes us different to the flock of people who just prop up affiliate marketing sites, is the fact that we actually interact on a daily basis with all the dating sites and encourage their participation in encouraging reviews for their dating sites. By bringing together consumers and dating site managers, and even creators at one place, we believe we can be a catalyst in playing a role towards improving online dating experiences.
We have also created the Golden Heart Consumer Choice Awards which are the first consumer review-driven online dating awards in the industry. We’ve been thrilled, to say the least, at how well these have been received. We also have a YouTube channel dedicated to providing consumers with video reviews of dating sites, which is the first such channel on YouTube. Lastly, I believe I am also the first site of this type to brand my own persona around online dating reviews. My goal is to have my face and caricature be synonymous with dating site reviews.
How did you get into the online dating industry?
I finished my MBA and decided not to go back into real estate, which is where I worked for 10+ years. Learning more about people and cultures in general is the most important thing to me at this point in my life, rather than striking it rich or settling into suburban America. I work an insane amount of hours on this site because it allows me to travel and work from anywhere. It’s been a gift and I feel like my role is to just wake up everyday and provide massive value for anyone that reads our site. That’s an ongoing effort.
What are you most proud of in your role?
Just playing a part in helping people connect with great dating sites. Over coming months we are over-hauling our top level review pages and then integrating more analytical information about dating sites than will be available at any one dating site reviews site. We are really excited about that.
What are the biggest challenges the industry faces?
I’d have to say online dating overload. Too many sites that are the same. I am for more regulation of online dating sites.
What do you believe is the most exciting opportunity facing the industry?
I think the marriage of events and online dating – where companies like POF and Match are bringing people together to meet – is the future. Technology is only as good as the first real life conversation. That has to happen off a phone or desktop to make a connection; this will never change.
Which service or company do you admire in the online dating industry?
Wow, that’s a tough one. Great question. I admire social impact entrepreneurs and in this space there are not enough of them yet. The online dating business is about love, lasting partnership, and meeting basic human needs. I’ve always believed that if we are to be true to our sense of moral responsibility and this social contract that we have subscribed to, that we have to embrace opportunities to have our business success reflect who we are as a person.
I’d like to see more companies in the online dating business spending their riches making an impact on global issues. I think the message would resonate and be good for business and I am sure that that is a company I would give a second look.
