Industry standards body the Online Dating Association has today released its first major report, on the dating industry’s shift to mobile.

The Dating on the Move report was created in collaboration with Inline Policy, and looks at how online dating’s move to mobile is affecting its consumers.

The report gives a detailed overview of both the benefits and challenges this change has brought about over the past few years.

The ODA and Inline also surveys members of the ODA – who include eHarmony, Match.com and Lovestruck –  about their thoughts, concerns and predictions about the industry.

The 24-page report also looks at how the ODA, and online dating companies, are looking to rise to any challenges this mobile shift has created, by making its services even safer for members.

Speaking about the report, the Chief Executive of the ODA, George Kidd said: “This reports tells us that the important issues online — protecting data, being straight on the terms for using a service, blocking scammers and those intent on mischief and helping users get the most from services and stay safe are every bit as important in the mobile environment.

“We encourage app companies to understand their significance and the responsibilities that come with this, to rise to these challenges and to join and strengthen the ODA and build a safe healthy market. It’s also a challenge to the ODA and the established sector to embrace new platforms, new services and new providers.

“By working together across all platforms and making best use of new technologies we can make dating a great experience for all our users.”

The report was created with Inline Policy, a political consultancy that helps organisations with regulatory issues in the UK and across Europe.

Elena Magrina, Policy Analyst at Inline, said: “The report has shown that the shift from desktop to mobile dating brings new internal and external challenges. It is vital for the industry to proactively address them as this will help maintain consumer confidence and safety.”

In addition to offering a comprehensive overview of the industry’s shift to mobile, the Dating on the Move report also gives a fascinating insight into the thoughts and concerns of today’s online dating companies.
