App Annie, the popular mobile data and analytics company, has shared its quarterly report which summarises user activity and trends throughout Q1 2021.
Global spend on apps surged by 40% compared to the same period last year, with $32 billion spent on in-app purchases globally across iOS and Google Play. This marks the biggest Quarter since records began.
The numbers illustrate the remarkable impact that the pandemic has had on the app market.
Q1 2020 was the first period of global lockdowns and stay-at-home orders forced consumers to seek out indoor stimulation, and they found it on their smartphones, through games and other highly engaging apps such as video streaming and social sharing platforms.
App Annie also shared a list of the most popular apps worldwide, split across downloads, consumer spend, and monthly active users. Tinder sat at top spot in consumer spend during Q4 of 2020, but has dropped two places in Q1 2021, falling below both YouTube and TikTok.
The popular dating app has fallen below the two major entertainment platforms, and this could be considered to be a byproduct of the boost that entertainment platforms have received during the enhanced usership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
