Bindr: New Label-Free Dating App
Bindr is a new LGBTQIA+ dating app that wants to encourage dating without labels. Co-founders Mary Richardson and Brandon Teller were inspired to create the platform after noticing a lack of inclusivity in online dating.
In an interview with FOX43 News, Richardson shared that “there’s a missing market for bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary. Everything in-between that doesn’t fit in these three big labels of I’m Gay, Straight or Lesbian”.
Its website explains that each user has the ability to select the type of person they’re interested in seeing, but that the app by default leaves all options on at first
The platform launched in August 2022 after receiving $30,000 in funding from the Penn State Launchbox Programme, a support initiative for startups. After six months, the platform had 10,000 users, with Bindr now seeing over 30,000 sign-ups.
As part of its inclusiveness, the platform is also poly and couple friendly, supporting ethically non-monogamous relationships in its online community.
Beyond just dating, Bindr is looking to support the LGBTQIA+ community through partnerships with local organisations. It has a resources page where users can conveniently find links and contact details for relevant organisations including the Anti-Violence Project and The Trevor Project.
Richardson and Teller highlighted to FOX43 News that women and the LGBTQ community don’t receive enough VC funding, and they want to inspire that change.
