Coffee Meets Bagel has become the latest dating app to introduce video, to help users get a sense of the personalities of potential matches.
Every day, the dating app will create a daily topic, such as “Dinner or drinks on a first date?” or “What stereotype do you live up to?”
Users can then record a personalised video answer to that daily topic by clicking the camcorder icon next to “Today’s Topic”.
From here you press and hold the blue button at the bottom of the screen to record yourself, and click “Post” to upload it to the feed.
To see which other users have answered the question-of-the-day, you simply scroll through the feed and tap the video for sound.
As Coffee Meets Bagel said, the feature is designed to “let you see your Bagels’ mannerisms, hear their voice, and get more insight about their personality — before you even meet!”
Dawoon Kang, co-founder and COO of Coffee Meets Bagel, said: “Letting yourself be seen by people you don’t know can be scary. But like human connection researcher Brené Brown says, without that, you can’t form a real connection.
“Coffee Meets Bagel wants to make sharing fun, spontaneous and authentic with ultra-short videos that users take of themselves to answer specific questions.
“Over a period of days and weeks, you could see a number of videos from someone and really get an idea of who they are. A video is worth 1,000 pictures.”
Kang said that during testing, over 50% of members that used the feature were liked that day, and those that did were seen by 5x as many people in that area.
