Study: Two Thirds of Tinder Users Are In A Relationship

A new study claims that two thirds of Tinder users are in a relationship, with almost half saying that they’re not actually interested in finding dates. It found that people stay on dating apps regardless of their relationship status, as if it were a social media account.

Sky News outlines that the study spoke with 1,400 users aged 18 to 74 about their motivations for using the dating app. The research found that dating app accounts provide entertainment and social connections, even if the user may already be in a relationship.

This creates “a game of deception”, says Germano Vera Cruz, a data scientist, professor of psychology, and the study’s co-author. She explains that this phenomenon results in frustration as singles are paired with other Tinder users who may not be interested in a relationship.

Dr Elias Aboujaoude, another co-author of the study, found that the results matched user testimonies where “there was the sense that they were spending too much time using them as entertainment or to distract themselves from other things”, he shared.

Sky News shares that Tinder has challenged past studies that examined the marital status of its users – and in 2015, it said “hundreds of success stories emailed to us every week about a new engagement or marriage”.
