Black Gen Z Daters Prioritise Values and Clarity From The Start

A new survey from dating app BLK suggests that Black Gen Z daters are entering 2026 with clearer intentions and higher expectations around communication, values, and platform performance. The research, based on responses from more than 4,000 BLK users, indicates a shift away from performative dating behaviours toward early transparency about beliefs, boundaries, and long-term goals.

According to the survey, nearly 90% of respondents said they want to express core values upfront when dating, including views on religion, politics, finances, and family. Rather than avoiding traditionally sensitive topics, a majority of users see them as essential early conversations. BLK reported that 86% of surveyed daters are willing to discuss these issues within the first few dates, while more than half identified religion as a non-negotiable factor when choosing a partner.

Political alignment also emerged as a key consideration. Over 40% of respondents said civic engagement and political views influence their dating decisions, reflecting a broader trend among younger users who see personal values and social responsibility as intertwined. The findings suggest that compatibility is increasingly measured by shared direction rather than surface-level attraction.

The survey also highlights a more pragmatic approach to past relationships. Despite widespread fatigue with modern dating behaviours – 66.5% of respondents said they had experienced “ghostlighting” – more than 70% said they would consider giving an ex another chance if that person demonstrated meaningful behavioural change. BLK framed this willingness as conditional, emphasising accountability and improved communication rather than nostalgia or convenience.

Expectations of dating platforms themselves are also rising. More than half of respondents said they rely on BLK’s matching algorithms to deliver accurate and personalised matches, particularly around shared communities such as faith, politics, and social values. Nearly 57% reported reviewing profiles, photos, and playlists before deciding whether to engage, reinforcing the importance of nuanced profiles and discovery tools.
