BLK Report: Black Gen Z Users Push Toward More Meaningful Dating

A recent report from BLK, the dating app for Black singles, highlights a major shift in dating behaviours among Black Gen Z users – signalling widespread rejection of casual, undefined “situationships” in favour of clearer, value-based relationships.

The findings stem from a survey of more than 4,000 BLK users, which reveals many are seeking intention and transparency from the very start. Nearly half (47.7%) report discussing major compatibility areas – including faith, finances, and family aspirations – within the first few conversations. By the time of the first few dates, 86% say they’ve already raised these topics.

The report identifies several distinct approaches reshaping how members approach dating. One is what BLK calls “Community Cuffing”: around 40% of users say they meet through community venues like religious gatherings, creative groups, or social meetups rather than random online matches – a move many say feels safer and more rooted in shared social context.

Religion plays an important role. The data shows that 56.4% of respondents consider active faith a key factor when evaluating a potential partner – not just as a label, but as a sign of lifestyle alignment and emotional maturity.

The survey also shows growing intolerance for opaque, inconsistent dating behaviour. Within the community, 66.5% have experienced “ghostlighting” – a blend of ghosting and gaslighting. Despite this, many remain open to second chances: 71% said they would consider reconnecting if the person showed genuine change.

A concept BLK calls “ROEmancing” underscores a broader mindset shift: 81.9% of respondents emphasise emotional return – clarity, support, consistency – over drama or superficial attraction. This reflects wider generational trends. Last year a survey by industry analysts found almost 80% of Gen Z dating-app users report “swipe fatigue,” citing emotional exhaustion and a lack of meaningful connection.
