Mastodon Restructures as Founder Steps Down

Mastodon is entering a major transition period as its creator, Eugen Rochko, steps down from the CEO role, marking the biggest leadership shift in the platform’s nine-year history. The move comes as Mastodon adopts a nonprofit structure intended to support long-term stability and reduce dependence on a single individual.

The platform will now be overseen by a board of directors that includes Biz Stone, Karien Bezuidenhout, Esra’a Al Shafei, departing Community Director Hannah Aubry, and Felix Hlatky, who assumes the Executive Director role. Rochko will remain involved as an advisor and has received a €1 million compensation for years of under-market pay while building the service.

Rochko told TechCrunch that burnout played a significant role in his decision, explaining, “[Mastodon has] become kind of synonymous with my identity… I want it to succeed. And it’s led to a lot of stress, and obviously, it ultimately led to burnout.” He added that stepping back will help restore balance after a decade spent almost entirely focused on the project.

The leadership reshuffle comes as Mastodon finalizes its nonprofit transition. While the organization already operates as a 501(c)(3) in the U.S., it’s working to establish a new Belgian AISBL to replace its German entity, which lost nonprofit status last year. The Belgian organization will eventually serve as Mastodon’s primary home.

To support the new structure, Mastodon raised funding from several well-known backers, including Jeff Atwood and his family, Biz Stone, Craig Newmark, AltStore, and the Global Chinese Community of Universal Digital Commons. Executive Director Hlatky, who previously guided Mastodon’s nonprofit formation pro bono, said his motivation stems from a desire to move away from traditional venture-capital dynamics.
