Meta Launches Dedicated Japan Profile for Threads

Meta has created a new official Threads account specifically for Japanese users as it intensifies efforts to grow the app in one of X’s strongest markets.

Announced on April 6, 2026, the Japan-specific Threads profile will share localized information, tips, and updates about Threads, Instagram, Meta AI, and Meta’s broader initiatives, including Meta Quest. The account aims to provide region-relevant content and increase engagement among Japanese users.

Japan represents a particularly important market for X. In late March 2026, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, stated that Japan has more daily active users and higher time spent on the platform than any other country. He noted that more than two-thirds of Japan’s population uses X, giving it one of the highest social media penetration rates historically.

Meta’s move comes shortly after those comments and forms part of its ongoing strategy to position Threads as a leading micro-content and real-time information platform. Since its launch in 2023, Threads has grown rapidly, reaching 400 million active users. This compares with X’s reported 600 million monthly active users, narrowing the gap between the two apps – but only in certain markets and parts of the world.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously described Threads as an attempt to build a “more positive” alternative to what Twitter (now X) had become. The app benefits from seamless integration with Instagram, which has supported fast user acquisition. This Japan-focused account is an obvious prelude to an attempt to compete direclty with X’s hold on Japanese users but time will tell if Threads is able to maintain a strong enough user base for that initial push.
