Reddit Introduces [App] Label to Identify Bot Accounts
Reddit has added a new labeling system designed to improve transparency around automated accounts and combat the growing presence of AI-powered bots on the platform. The update, shared by CEO Steve Huffman, introduces an “[App]” tag that will appear next to usernames of accounts utilizing automation in approved ways.
According to Huffman, the goal is to preserve Reddit’s core identity as a space for “messy, opinionated, but always real” human conversation while adapting to the increasing role of AI on the internet. “If you see that label, you know you’re interacting with a machine, not a person,” he explained. Developers can register compliant bots to receive the designation, helping users distinguish between genuine human posts and automated activity.
Accounts suspected of automation without the [App] label may be asked to verify human control. Those that fail could face restrictions or bans. The change follows backlash from a 2025 University of Zurich study that deployed undisclosed AI bot profiles to test their influence on controversial topics. Many users were upset upon learning they had been unknowingly interacting with bots, prompting Reddit to strengthen transparency measures.
The new system aims to balance openness with accountability. Huffman noted that Reddit is also exploring additional privacy-friendly methods for users to confirm humanness amid tightening global regulations around verification and AI disclosure.
