Storytelling Becomes The Recommended Dating Profile Trend

New research suggests that the key to standing out on dating apps like Tinder and Hinge lies not in listing your best qualities, but in telling a compelling personal story. A study published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media found that narrative-style profiles generate significantly more empathy and romantic interest than traditional list-like bios.

Led by Professor Gurit Birnbaum of Reichman University in Israel, the research involved 594 participants who were shown various dating profiles. Some profiles used straightforward bullet-point facts (e.g., “plays guitar, studies economics, likes to travel”), while others wove those same details into a short personal story. In photo-based experiments, neutral images were compared to photos showing the person engaged in everyday activities.

Results consistently showed that participants felt greater empathy toward narrative profiles, which in turn predicted stronger romantic interest. Storytelling helped users see the person behind the profile as a “fellow human being” rather than a “mere commodity,” countering the transactional feel often associated with online dating. “People can’t feel that from bullet points,” Birnbaum explained. “It’s not height or ambition that makes someone fall for you, it’s your entire story.”

The researchers noted that storytelling conveys intelligence, creativity, and willingness to invest in a relationship. Many users feel burned out by superficial swiping and self-promotion. By humanizing profiles, storytelling offers a more authentic alternative that could improve connection rates.

While the study focused on initial interest rather than long-term outcomes, it suggests that a well-crafted personal story may be more effective than highlighting traits alone. As more and more platforms experiment with new matching systems and AI integration, profile-building trends like this might influence the way that users are engaging with those tools, at least in the short term.
