TikTok Expands Accessibility Controls With New Viewing and Motion Settings

TikTok is rolling out additional accessibility features aimed at supporting users with visual, neurological, and cognitive sensitivities, continuing a broader effort to make its platform more customizable and comfortable to use. The updates, announced on December 16, introduce new controls that allow users to limit visual intensity and motion effects across the app.

One of the most notable changes is a new option that lets users disable high dynamic range (HDR) video playback. When enabled, the setting automatically switches all content to standard dynamic range viewing. HDR video can enhance brightness and contrast, but for some users it can also trigger discomfort, including migraines or eye strain, particularly for those with light sensitivity or low-vision conditions. By allowing HDR to be turned off entirely, TikTok is giving users more consistency and control over how videos appear in their feed.

TikTok is also introducing a reduced motion setting designed to minimize motion-heavy effects within the app. This option limits animations, transitions, and other visual movements that can be challenging for users with motion sensitivity or cognitive conditions. According to the company, the setting reduces screen transitions and slide effects while keeping essential interactive elements, such as menus, pop-ups, and tooltips, fully functional. The goal is to preserve usability while cutting down on potentially disorienting visuals.

These updates build on TikTok’s existing accessibility tools, which already include features such as auto-generated captions, text-to-speech, and adjustable text size. Earlier in 2025, the company expanded support for alternative text on photos and introduced improved text presentation options and adjustable color contrast, giving users more flexibility based on individual needs.
