Verification Becomes Integral To Preventing Dating App Impersonation

New data suggests that verification tools are becoming integral to how people navigate online dating, with photo and phone checks increasingly serving as the baseline for trust before offline meetings.

A survey conducted by ClarityCheck of more than 4,000 recent dating-app users found that 68% had encountered impersonation in the past six months, ranging from profiles with stolen photos to unverifiable contact details. To address these concerns, 57% of respondents said they now conduct at least one form of verification before agreeing to meet in person. In a previous study of 3,120 users, similar results were found, with many users putting verification above everything else even if it meant losing the chance to interact with legitimate matches who simply didn’t verify who they were.

The methods vary, but the most common involve reverse image searches to test the authenticity of profile pictures and cross-referencing phone numbers against public records or online activity. While photo verification can reveal stolen or duplicated images, it doesn’t get past the risk of AI-generated or altered images that may not be identified – and the survey found that confirming a phone number provided users with greater confidence. Participants reported being more inclined to pursue conversations when a number could be tied to a consistent digital footprint, while unverifiable numbers often led them to terminate contact.

Advances in image editing and generative AI have made it easier to create convincing fake profiles, often using generic biographies and manipulated images. For many users, discrepancies uncovered during verification are the first and clearest warning signs of impersonation, even if the catfishing or impersonation itself isn’t fully “proven”.

Interestingly, the behavior spans across age groups. Those aged 25 to 45 were only marginally more likely to turn to verification than users between 18 and 25, suggesting that heightened caution is now a universal feature of app-based dating rather than being something left to a typically more tech-literate younger generation.
