happn Pushes Dutch Voting Campaign, Shares Dating Statistics
Dating app happn launched a civic-minded campaign ahead of the Dutch municipal elections on March 18, 2026, encouraging its users to prioritize voting over swiping. A February 2026 survey of 1,097 Dutch happn users revealed that only 62% plan to cast a ballot, while 21% do not intend to vote and 17% remain undecided – meaning 38% may skip the polls entirely. This follows a similar campaign that happn ran in France earlier this month, urging users to vote.
To motivate participation, happn will send a push notification on election day reminding users to “pause dating for a moment and go vote.” The light-hearted message aligns with the app’s core philosophy of fostering real-life connections, playfully suggesting singles might even encounter a potential match en route to the polling station and reconnect later in the app.
The research also explored the intersection of politics and dating among Dutch singles. Contrary to assumptions, political differences rarely derail romantic prospects: only 12% view opposing views as a red flag. Instead, 43% believe differing opinions can spark interesting conversations, and 52% see them as manageable with mutual respect and tolerance. Politics is seldom a first-date topic – around half of respondents prefer to delay such discussions until a relationship deepens, focusing early on chemistry and connection rather than ideology.
Claire Rénier, Head of Communications at happn, emphasized the campaign’s dual purpose: “With this initiative, we want to remind singles of their civic duty in a fun, non-judgmental way while reinforcing that meaningful moments – whether voting or meeting someone special – happen offline. This fits happn’s mission to inspire real-world encounters beyond the screen.”
