56% of Singles Say AI Photos Are a Dealbreaker

Modern dating often starts with swipes and messages rather than in-person meetings, giving singles ample opportunity to spot warning signs early. A recent survey of 1,000 actively dating U.S. adults by eJuiceDB, a vape retailer exploring broader lifestyle trends, reveals what behaviors instantly kill attraction and where boundaries are firmly drawn.Digital authenticity tops the list of concerns.

56% of respondents view AI-generated or heavily edited photos as a red flag, while 41% say looking significantly different in real life from profile pictures kills attraction immediately. Misleading or outdated photos rank as the biggest issue for 24% overall – jumping to 45% among Gen Z, who prioritize up-to-date digital representations. Over a third (39%) also flag excessive selfies or attention-seeking content, and 52% are turned off by negative, disrespectful, or offensive social media posts, with women (58%) more likely to see this as a hard “no” than men (42%).

In-person behaviors carry equal weight. Poor hygiene stands out for 68% as a red flag (rising to 72% among women), followed by rudeness to service staff (67% overall, 73% women vs. 61% men). Poor table manners (64%), rude public actions like loud talking or speakerphone use (55%), and last-minute flaking (51%) also prompt quick exits. Repeatedly mentioning an ex (63%) or pulling an “Irish goodbye” and leaving an event without telling anybody (63%) are instant dealbreakers, as is requesting money via apps like Venmo post-date without prior discussion.

AI integration in dating sparks resistance too: 56% reject AI-altered photos, 46% dislike AI-written messages, and 38% wouldn’t date someone who’s simulated romance with AI chatbots – higher among older generations and women. Singles seek green flags: emotional presence (57%), feeling prioritized (56%), and genuine curiosity (54%). Hobbies like fixating on online drama (48%) or relying heavily on astrology (60%) can deter matches.
