AppLovin Launches TikTok Competitor Gist After Bid Attempt

Major mobile advertising and app monetization company AppLovin has quietly launched a new social media platform, Gist. The app, which requires a referral code for access, combines elements of TikTok, Lemon8, and RedNote, featuring photo carousels, short videos, and mini-games. Users can select interest categories such as travel, relationships, and career advice to personalize their feed.

The launch follows AppLovin’s unsuccessful bid to acquire TikTok earlier in 2026. The company had expressed interest in buying the platform outside of China, citing its advertising technology and potential to improve monetization and recommendation systems. After that effort failed, AppLovin appears to be pursuing its own social product. Gist is currently in an early phase, with dozens of accounts including “founding creators.” The company is actively hiring specialists to recruit US creators and manage content quality.

AppLovin CEO Adam Foroughi has previously noted strong growth in the company’s non-gaming consumer advertising segment. Gist could serve as both a content platform and a testing ground for advertising strategies, particularly in e-commerce, where social apps tend to attract significant marketer interest. The company’s market capitalization exceeded $163 billion recently, driven in part by expansion beyond gaming.

The development reflects a broader trend of companies outside traditional social media entering the space amid regulatory uncertainty around platforms like TikTok and shifting user behaviors. Gist’s quiet rollout suggests a deliberate strategy to build content and early user engagement before wider promotion.
