Crime and Safety Concerns Raised Over LGBTQ+ Dating Apps

Concerns over safety on a number of dating apps have increased following reports of violent crimes directed at users, all linked to poor user protection and app security. Grindr, widely used by gay and bisexual men, has become a populer target for criminals luring victims into dangerous situations under false pretenses – but it’s been far from the only platform that are concerned about.

Recent cases in South Africa, where a gang allegedly used Grindr to kidnap, assault, and rob men, have brought attention to these risks. In Australia, similar attacks have been reported, with men assaulted after arranging meet-ups. The fear of retaliation and societal judgment prevents many victims from reporting these crimes, especially in areas of the world where same-sex relationships are judged more harshly.

This isn’t the fault of the dating platforms themselves – beyond potential app security flaws or cases where users are poorly protected by the platform itself. These issues highlight a long-standing problem of dating apps being semi-anonymous, and that successful matches are usually shifted to another chat app (like Kik or WhatsApp) where the dating platform no longer has any way to protect its users.

Solving this issue won’t be easy, but dating apps must take more proactive steps to enhance user safety – or at least ways to filter out potentially dangerous matches. This is especially true for LGBTQ+ dating platforms, where users are more likely to be targeted simply for their identity or sexual orientation.
