Dating App Users Embrace Cryptic Dating App Bios to Spark Connections

A new trend is emerging among young dating app users: cryptic bios that prioritize curiosity over exhaustive self-description. Reported by QuackQuack, India’s most-downloaded dating app with over 39 million users, this shift is particularly pronounced among Gen Z daters, who are moving away from traditional long-form profiles.

A survey conducted in August among 8,364 users aged 18 to 25 found that nearly 28% believe a puzzle-like bio generates more interest from potential matches. “It’s very cryptic, but the right person will get it, and that’s the goal,” said QuackQuack Founder and CEO Ravi Mittal. Many participants reported that cryptic bios have improved both the quantity and quality of incoming messages, with over 40% noting it helps them find people who “just get their vibe.”

Emojis are a key component of these streamlined profiles, but moderation is critical. Survey respondents indicated that three to five emojis paired with a single descriptive word strikes the right balance between intrigue and clarity, while more than six emojis can overwhelm potential matches – with specific emoji choices making or breaking interactions. “Niche emojis with grounding words, that’s the combo that hits home,” said 23-year-old medical student Nihal, citing his bio featuring three emojis and the word “nocturnal” as transformative.

The appeal of cryptic bios extends beyond style, offering a measure of safety and control. More than 31% of women over 20 reported that keeping information minimal helps set boundaries while discouraging unwanted interactions, since it gives users less to work with and would make things like over-familiarity or faked shared interests far less common. Some users also include a single value or preference to filter matches effectively, turning their entire bio into a single hard line in the sand.

QuackQuack’s research also find that larger cities tended to favour shorter bios, while mid-sized cities were more likely to feature profiles with slightly longer bios that include individual interests . In either case, the most successful bios were the brief ones that tried to drive engagement through curiosity – while also avoidng the “cringe” of longer heartfelt bios that Gen Z may have swerved away from.
