Dating Apps See Double Duty As Social Hubs

While dating apps were originally designed to facilitate romantic connections, they are increasingly being used for other purposes, from friendship and networking to travel companionship. As younger generations and marginalized communities embrace these platforms in new ways, the traditional perception of dating apps is shifting, especially now that they dominate modern relationship-building methods.

One significant trend is the growing use of dating apps within the LGBTQ+ community. A 2023 Pew Research Center study found that 51% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the U.S. have used a dating app, compared to 28% of heterosexual adults. While this naturally leads to a lot of relationships, it also provides a safer and more accessible way for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect – providing an easy way to find a community of likeminded people for support or comfort.

Additionally, Gen Z’s adoption of dating apps is reshaping the industry. Platforms like Hinge, valued at over $400 million in 2023, have gained popularity among younger users, with 73% of its user base aged 18 to 34, according to Ofcom. However, many of these users aren’t solely looking for romance – research by Kaspersky in 2021 found that 48% of people use dating apps simply to meet new people, while 7% explicitly use them to promote their social media accounts.

Beyond dating, some apps are designed to help users form friendships. Bumble’s BFF mode and platforms like Peanut, which connects new mothers, are addressing the challenges of making friends as an adult. Meanwhile, travelers are using dating apps to find fellow solo explorers, with services like Hey! Vina and Hostelworld’s group chats facilitating connections abroad.

Despite ongoing concerns around safety and authenticity, dating apps continue to grow in popularity. Whether for romance, friendship, or simply human connection, their role in social interaction appears to be expanding far beyond their original purpose.
