Grid-Map-Based Gay Dating App Chunkr Launches
A new dating app called Chunkr has launched on iOS, offering a combination of classic grid browsing and a strong location-based map feature tailored for gay men. Created by software engineer Justin, the app aims to provide a more privacy-focused and culturally attuned alternative to existing platforms in the gay dating space.
Chunkr features a familiar grid layout for discovering nearby and global users, along with detailed profile customization. Its most notable addition is the map function, which allows users to explore active areas, see what’s happening locally, and maintain greater privacy. Users can create a separate profile exclusively for the map and control how long they remain visible, addressing common concerns about constant exposure on location-based apps.
The app is currently free to use and was built with an emphasis on simplicity, speed, and community relevance. Justin noted that he wanted Chunkr to feel modern and thoughtful rather than overly corporate. In an interview with BearWorldMag, he made it clear that dating apps are a core part of the social infrastructure of many gay communities, and that he wanted to create a platform that served that role without being tainted by algorithms or compromising on its own core features.
To that end, the branding has a bold, playful, and distinctly queer aesthetic that particularly resonates with the bears and cub side of the gay community, but without making it impenetrable for the wider gay community as a whole.
Chunkr is available now on iOS, with an Android version expected soon. A web version is not planned in the near term, as development priority remains on mobile. hunkr has gained early traction, reaching approximately 1,500 users shortly after its April 2026 release. Justin has invited the community to download the app, test its features, and provide feedback to help shape future updates.
