Hinge Introduces AI-Generated “Convo Starters”
Hinge has launched a new feature designed to help daters send better first messages. Called “Convo Starters,” the tool uses generative AI to suggest personalised opening lines based on a potential match’s profile photos and prompt answers – offering a way to spark conversation beyond the usual “Hi” or “How are you?”. Hinge says the new feature is available now in the U.S., with future international launches likely on the way.
The decision comes after Hinge’s own research showed that 72% of daters are more likely to seriously consider someone when a like comes with a message – and that likes with personalised comments were twice as likely to lead to actual dates. With Convo Starters, when you tap “like” on a profile in Discover, the app may show up to three unique conversation suggestions under a user’s photos or prompts. These suggestions are optional – users still type the message themselves, so human input is required – but they aim to lower the barrier for first contact.
During early testing, over a third of users said they felt more confident reaching out after seeing Convo Starters. Hinge’s President and CMO, Jackie Jantos, commented that the feature was developed in response to feedback that many people struggle with what to say – “When you comment on someone’s profile, skip the generic ‘hey’ or surface-level compliment,” said the company’s Lead Relationship Scientist, Logan Ury. “Instead, use that moment to share something thoughtful and specific.
Convo Starters builds on a broader push by Hinge this year to encourage deeper, more meaningful interactions: earlier in 2025 the app rolled out features like Prompt Feedback (AI-driven suggestions to improve profile prompts) and Match Note (a private space for users – including those from underrepresented groups – to share important personal context after matching).
