Hinge Works with Psychotherapist Esther Perel for Dating Prompts

Hinge is rolling out a major update to its user experience by partnering with renowned psychotherapist Esther Perel to revamp its profile prompts. The initiative replaces standard dating app questions with more introspective, story-driven alternatives, aiming to encourage more meaningful conversations from the start.

The new prompt collection, called “Your World,” is designed to shift user interaction away from superficial banter and toward deeper storytelling. Instead of asking users to list fun facts or preferences, the prompts invite personal reflection, such as “I’m in my element when…” or “The kindest thing someone has ever done for me…” Perel’s goal was to create digital prompts that evoke the natural flow of conversation often found in real-life shared spaces – like a bookstore or record shop- where common interests facilitate organic connections.

According to Hinge President and CMO Jackie Jantos, the prompts are meant to create a bridge between online chats and in-person interactions, highlighting emotional depth without overwhelming users. “The best prompts are ones that [allow] an individual to offer more about themselves in a way that feels intimate but not overtly so,” Jantos noted.

This redesign aligns with a broader industry trend toward fostering authenticity in online dating, particularly as users grow fatigued with gamified swiping and surface-level engagement. Perel’s involvement brings a therapeutic lens to Hinge’s product design, reinforcing the app’s positioning as a space for intentional relationship-building rather than casual matches.

The update is expected to roll out globally in the coming weeks.
