Instagram Enables Carousel Reordering

Instagram has introduced a long-requested feature that allows users to rearrange the order of images and videos in published carousel posts. The update brings simple “long press and drag” functionality to carousel editing, giving creators more flexibility to refine their content presentation after publishing.

Previously, once a carousel was posted, the sequence was locked in. Now, users can reorder media items at any time to better reflect their creative vision or optimize engagement. However, the feature has limitations: users still cannot add new photos or videos to an existing carousel. Any additions require creating and publishing a new post.

Instagram described the change as a response to consistent user feedback. Many creators had expressed frustration at being unable to tweak the order of multi-image or multi-video posts, especially when testing different storytelling flows or responding to performance data.

The update is particularly relevant given the proven performance advantages of carousel content. In 2024, Instagram head Adam Mosseri noted that carousels tend to drive higher engagement because they encourage users to spend more time on a single post. Research from Buffer in March 2025 supported this, showing carousel posts earn an average of around 12% more engagement than single-image or single-video posts. The ability to reorder gives creators an additional tool to experiment with sequencing and potentially boost reach and interaction rates.

While video content may still be the core focus of most platforms, Instagram seems to be pushing for carousels as an alternative – and that push is clearly paying off, given the increase in engagement. Allowing for these quick adjustments not only gives more flexibility to carousels overall, but also doesn’t inherently change how they work at a base level.
