Instagram Experiments with More Algorithm Control Features

Instagram is testing additional ways to let users influence its recommendation system. The updates expand on the existing Your Algorithm tool, which allows users to indicate topics they want to see more or less of in their feed. Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri shared several concepts currently in testing or planned for future release.

One approach involves pulling down on the home screen to access the Your Algorithm panel, where users can add or remove topics based on their engagement. Another test places direct access to topic controls between Reels in the feed. Lower function bar options for recommended Reels are also under consideration, allowing quick signals of interest or disinterest. Conversational prompts to refine recommendations are being explored, aiming to make the algorithm feel more interactive.

Mosseri described the goal as making the algorithm feel like something users talk to rather than something that happens to them. This aligns with Meta’s broader use of AI to personalize experiences based on a wider range of cues.

However, the changes do not fully address some user demands, such as a chronological feed showing only followed accounts. Critics note that algorithm controls often serve more as reassurance than practical tools, with most users preferring to scroll without manual adjustments. Usage data for Your Algorithm has not been publicly detailed.
