Mastodon Adds Email Newsletters to Expand Creator Reach
Mastodon has introduced email newsletter functionality in version 4.6, allowing creators to send posts directly to subscribers’ inboxes. The feature enables distribution even to users without Mastodon accounts, potentially helping the platform grow beyond its current user base.
Subscribers simply provide an email address to receive updates. Mastodon’s default character limit is 500, though server administrators can adjust this for longer content. The company notes that newsletters are initially targeted at institutional users and those with hosted or self-managed servers, as email distribution increases operational costs. Creators need appropriate permissions on their server to use the tool.
The update is part of Mastodon’s broader push toward community and creator support. Version 4.6 also includes refreshed user profiles and “Collections,” Mastodon’s version of suggested follow lists. These changes aim to make the decentralized platform more accessible and useful for ongoing engagement.
Mastodon currently has around 735,000 monthly active users, down from a peak of over 2 million. The wider fediverse exceeds one million active accounts. Email newsletters could help creators build portable audiences that persist even if they switch servers, reducing dependence on centralized platforms.
The feature may appeal to media organizations, independent journalists, and bloggers seeking privacy-conscious distribution methods. Anonymous subscriptions could attract users wary of tracking on traditional newsletter services.
