Match Group Eliminates Chief Operating Officer Role

Match Group has announced that it is eliminating the role of Chief Operating Officer, resulting in the departure of Hesam Hosseini after 18 years with the company. The move reflects ongoing restructuring under CEO Spencer Rascoff, who joined in February 2025, and comes amid broader struggles in the dating app industry to retain and engage younger users. This comes not long before the SPARKS product event, which could indicate that the company is planning to make major changes to its operations – both internally and with its external products.

Hosseini was promoted to COO on April 1, 2025, while retaining his prior role as CEO of Evergreen & Emerging Brands. A source familiar with the decision indicated that Rascoff and Hosseini had previously discussed whether the COO position remained necessary for the company’s current phase. Hosseini’s employment agreement was set to auto-renew on April 1, 2026, but Match opted to reassess the role after one year.

In a LinkedIn post, Hosseini reflected positively on his tenure, stating he had “a front row seat to seeing our category grow into the number one way people find meaningful connection” and expressed confidence in Match Group’s future direction. The company pointed to his statement when asked for comment and confirmed no additional leadership changes or layoffs were announced.

The COO elimination follows a turbulent period for Match Group. The company reported a Q1 earnings beat, but its full-year 2026 guidance ($3.41–$3.54 billion) fell short of Wall Street’s $3.59 billion forecast. Earlier cost-saving measures included layoffs affecting 15% of the workforce and the departure of President Gary Swidler. In addition, Gen Z users are increasingly opting out of apps in favor of real-world experiences, contributing to burnout, fatigue, and declining engagement on platforms like Tinder, Hinge, and others.
