Messaging App Viber Introduces In-App Dating Feature
Rakuten Viber, the messaging app with over 1 billion users, has launched a built-in dating feature aimed at providing a seamless matchmaking experience within its platform. The new service, called Viber Dating, was officially introduced on February 14 and is currently in its beta testing phase.
At a media event in Bonifacio Global City, Viber CEO Ofir Eyal explained the reasoning behind the feature, stating that traditional dating apps face an inherent conflict. “There is a fundamental flaw with how dating apps work, because once you meet your partner and you’re no longer single, you’re no longer a customer, which has an inherent conflict,” Eyal said. “It’s not the case for us in Viber because the dating service is inside Viber.”
To ensure user privacy, Viber has designed the dating feature to remain separate from users’ existing contacts and messaging activity. The platform was also specifically tailored for the Philippine market, where mobile dating app usage is notably high. Eyal cited that more than 60% of couples in the country reported meeting through dating apps, making the Philippines a prime location for the feature’s launch.
Viber also emphasized security as a key aspect of its dating service, incorporating AI-driven screening and human moderation to verify users and prevent fraudulent activity. “Our experience in Viber for over 15 years combating fraud allows us to offer a dating experience which we believe could be the safest in the world,” Eyal stated.
Users must activate Viber with a phone number before creating a dating profile, ensuring an added layer of identity verification. Viber APAC Senior Director David Tse added that the platform’s credibility and verified user base could make it a strong alternative for those seeking meaningful connections. Following a promising initial launch, Viber plans to further develop and expand its dating feature based on user feedback.
