Meta Adds Dedicated Exclusion Audiences for Advertisers
Meta has introduced a new audience option designed to give advertisers greater control over who is excluded from seeing campaigns across its advertising platform.
The new exclusion-only custom audiences allow businesses to create customer lists that can be used solely to prevent specific people from being included in an ad audience. Unlike standard custom audiences, these lists cannot be used to target people directly.
Meta says the feature is intended to help advertisers avoid spending money on audiences that should not receive particular promotions. One use case is excluding customers who have opted out of a company’s products or services. Businesses can also use the lists to ensure that people they are legally or regulatorily prohibited from targeting are not accidentally included in campaigns.
The new audience type is designed as a permanent safeguard. Once created, an exclusion-only audience cannot be converted into a standard custom audience, and advertisers cannot use it to include users in campaigns. This separation is intended to reduce the risk of an exclusion list being mistakenly used for targeting.
The functionality adds another layer to Meta’s existing audience controls. Advertisers can already use standard custom audiences to both include and exclude people, but those lists can be used for either purpose. Meta’s new approach creates a dedicated mechanism for exclusion, potentially making certain compliance and audience-management processes easier to manage.
