MirrorMe Launches As Invite-Only Safe Dating App in South Africa
MirrorMe, a new dating app developed by Johannesburg-based GIOX DEV, officially launched on June 8. The platform uses an invite-only system with a rigorous vetting process to improve user safety and reduce risks such as scams and catfishing common on mainstream dating apps.
Founder Mysonne Spears said the idea stemmed from concerns about online dating safety, particularly for those seeking serious connections. The app requires thorough verification before granting access, emphasizing that safety is built into its foundation rather than added later. MirrorMe offers two subscription tiers: full access at R488 per month and guest access at R188 per month for those exploring the platform.
The service draws comparisons to exclusive apps like Raya, focusing on curated membership. It was developed with input from an early community on social media, and several features were shaped by user feedback during testing. The team includes Spears, CFO Dawid, and marketing lead Sposh.
On launch day, the app recorded 557 downloads within the first 24 hours. It continues to receive 10 to 17 new applications daily, supported by a TikTok following of around 63,000.
MirrorMe positions itself as a locally developed solution for South African users, distinct from global platforms. Spears noted that the app aims to facilitate genuine relationships and potentially networking opportunities. The company plans to add more features as it grows.
