Brits Opting for ‘Modern Hypergamy’ Approach to Partners

New research by luxury online dating site ‘Seeking’ has revealed that Brits are placing more importance on intellectual, cultural, lifestyle and economic factors when considering a partner.

According to data released by the site, emotional intelligence ranks as a priority for 31% of daters, followed by intellectual stimulation and personal style. Finding someone to learn and grow from was a key consideration for those polled, with a huge 57% looking for a love interest who complements their own intellectual and economic aspirations.

The data has seen a new trend for ‘modern hypergamy’ coined. Rather than traditional hypergamy – marrying for financial gain – the new approach takes more than money alone into account when considering potential partners.

“Modern hypergamy is about much more,” says Emma Hathorn, in-house dating and relationships expert at Seeking. “It reflects a shift towards valuing growth and shared benefits in relationships. Today, ambition, wealth, and status remain important, but it’s equally essential to find a partner who complements and enhances your life in meaningful ways.”

“Being with someone who inspires you to grow and evolve can turn a good relationship into a great one,” she said. “Choosing a partner who complements and enhances your attributes can lead to a deeply enriching and meaningful connection. A great relationship is one where both people are constantly learning and growing together.”

According to the dating expert, more people are adopting modern hypergamy into their dating lives, applying the concept in which people “date up” to “find someone who can offer mutual benefits and growth to not only the relationship but your life as a whole”.

“Whether it’s discovering new hobbies, exploring different cultures, or achieving personal milestones, having a partner who brings diverse strengths and insights can be incredibly rewarding,” Emma concluded.
