Modern Daters Are Putting More Thought Into Their Messages

For many modern daters, sending a message is no longer a split-second decision. A new study from Indian dating app QuackQuack suggests that singles are increasingly pausing, editing and sometimes deleting messages before sending them, as they pay closer attention to tone and how their words may be received.

The study surveyed 11,500 users aged 18 to 35 across Tier 1, 2 and 3 Indian cities about their digital dating and messaging habits. The findings point to a more deliberate approach to online conversations, with daters considering not only what they want to say but also how it might make the other person feel.

More than 4,000 respondents aged 25 to 35 described rewriting messages as a way to distinguish between what they initially want to say and what is more appropriate or meaningful in the conversation. This is also changing how some singles approach opening messages, with generic greetings such as “Hey, what’s up?” increasingly viewed as unlikely to move a conversation forward.

Instead, respondents said they were more inclined to reference something specific about a match’s profile or interests. The emphasis is less on producing a perfect message and more on demonstrating genuine engagement.

The survey also highlights greater awareness of tone. Some daters said they deliberately reduce sarcasm or reconsider jokes when communicating with a new match, recognising that humour can be interpreted differently over text.

Among respondents from metropolitan and suburban areas, 48% said editing messages was less about worrying how they would be judged and more about considering how their words might affect the recipient. This suggests that message editing is increasingly being framed as a form of interpersonal awareness rather than simply anxiety about dating – not simply doing it to make themselvs look good in pursuit of getting a date.

The same principle extends to follow-up messages and personal disclosures. About 39% of women and 31% of men surveyed said they consider whether a match is comfortable receiving additional attention or vulnerable information before double texting or opening up.
