Report: Social Media Insights Rarely Reach Beyond Marketing

A new report from Sprout Social highlights a persistent gap in how organizations use social media data. While 93% of industry professionals view collecting social media insights as important for growth, only 36% regularly apply that information to decisions outside the marketing department.

The findings, detailed in “The Intelligence Gap,” are based on responses from 705 social media professionals in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Data was gathered by research firm Panoplai between February 20 and March 16.

Brittany Hennessy, vice president of social intelligence evangelism at Sprout Social, pointed to the mismatch between real-time consumer conversations and slower internal processes. “Consumer conversations are happening in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and so most organizations are still processing that information very slowly,” she said. Social teams often identify issues or opportunities but struggle to move those insights to the departments that could act on them.

The volume of social data creates its own challenges. Negative comments from a small group can distort perceptions, and sorting valuable signals from noise remains difficult. Artificial intelligence can assist in filtering information, particularly during brand crises when overreactions risk making situations worse.

Misuse or underuse of social insights has concrete consequences. Thirty-three percent of respondents said their organizations missed cultural shifts in the past 12 to 24 months. Thirty-one percent missed early signals of changing consumer preferences, 26% escalated customer issues that could have been resolved sooner, 24% delayed product or messaging changes, and 21% lost market share to competitors.

Despite these gaps, social intelligence often delivers results faster than traditional research methods. Seventy-four percent of respondents reported receiving insights more quickly through social media. Confidence in fully leveraging the data remains low, however. Only 17% of professionals feel extremely confident their organizations use social intelligence to its potential. That figure rises to 43% among owners and founders but falls to 10% for individual contributors. Twenty-three percent of respondents said their organizations still treat social media primarily as a communications channel rather than a data source.
