Reuters: Social Media Becomes A Leading News Source

The Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report shows that social media has become the leading source of news for many users. Based on surveys of more than 85,000 people across 48 regions, the annual study found that social platforms now surpass television and news websites in daily news consumption.

This shift gives algorithms and online creators greater influence over how news is discovered and perceived. The report highlights the growing role of creators, who are often motivated by engagement and sponsorship rather than journalistic standards. This raises concerns about misinformation, selective framing, and content optimized for attention rather than accuracy.

All age groups reported higher reliance on social apps for news compared to other digital sources. TikTok and Instagram are increasing in influence as news platforms, while X has seen declining usage following ownership changes and audience fragmentation. Threads has gained traction as an alternative for real-time discussion.

AI chatbots are also rising as news sources, though their tendency to produce hallucinations and factual errors presents risks when users accept responses without verification. Naturally, this has resulted in user pushback against these systems for exactly this reason, due to the potential risks involved and the fact that more AI tools are being integrated into platforms already heavily used for news.

The findings point to vulnerabilities in the current information ecosystem. Social platforms prioritize engagement, which can amplify biased or misleading content. The concentration of news discovery on these apps makes the system susceptible to manipulation by platform owners or high-engagement creators.
