Snapchat Adds New Event Planning Tools

Snapchat has introduced new event-planning tools that allow users to organise real-world meetups directly from conversations, extending the platform’s focus on facilitating connections beyond the app.

The new Plans feature allows users to create an event, set a date and time, invite up to 200 people and send invitations through one-to-one chats. Guests can respond with “Going,” “Maybe” or “Can’t Go” without leaving the conversation.

Event organisers can manage details through a new My Plans section on their profiles, while users can view information about events they have accepted through friends’ profiles. Snapchat will also send attendees a reminder one hour before an event begins.

The feature also builds on Snapchat’s existing efforts to connect online activity with physical locations. Its Snap Map includes location listings and sharing functions, while the platform has previously introduced location-based loyalty badges and a Countdown feature for upcoming events.

Snapchat said 35% of its US users aged 13 to 24 now use group chats to make plans and organise events, according to a recent survey. The new functionality formalises that existing behaviour rather than requiring users to move to a separate calendar or event-planning service.
