Survey: Inflation Is Making Dating More Expensive and Selective

Inflation is affecting nearly every aspect of daily life, and dating is no exception. A new survey by DealSeek of 1,000 single or actively dating U.S. adults reveals that many Americans are now treating romance as a financial decision, with budgeting and cost-consciousness becoming central to dating behavior.

According to the survey, 71% of singles say dating has become more expensive over the past year, with 40% reporting they are going on fewer dates as a result. Budget constraints are clearly influencing choices. Only 25% of respondents believe spending up to $100 on a first date is reasonable, while the majority (57%) prefer to keep costs at $75 or less. One in five won’t exceed $35.

Financial attitudes are shifting perceptions of attractiveness. Half of singles (50%) view suggesting low-cost date ideas as a green flag, and 41% see using coupons or promo codes positively. In contrast, 61% consider overspending a red flag, and 78% are turned off by bragging about money. Dating profiles that highlight simple, low-cost activities make 61% of singles more likely to pursue a match, ranking higher than career ambition (53%) or a high-paying job (46%).

The survey also found notable gender and generational differences. Men are generally willing to spend more on first dates than women. Millennials appear less budget-conscious than Gen Z, who are more likely to keep spending under $75. Nearly half (47%) of singles admit they have intentionally tried to date someone who earns more than they do.

Financial pressures are also leading to less transparent behavior. Over half (53%) of respondents have misrepresented their finances while dating, including 21% who paid for things they couldn’t afford. Additionally, 42% have ghosted someone for financial reasons. Frugality and financial awareness are gaining appeal, while flashy spending is increasingly viewed negatively.

Google search data analyzed by DealSeek shows strong interest in affordable dating ideas. New York led in searches for “art gallery date ideas,” while Colorado and Maryland showed high interest in thrift store and paint-and-sip dates. Common alternatives include walks in the park, coffee dates, and other low- or no-cost activities.
