Threads Brings Messaging to the Web
Threads has rolled out messaging functionality on its web version, enabling users to access one-on-one and group chats directly from desktop browsers. The update was announced on May 5, 2026, by Meta’s head of Threads, Connor Hayes.
The new “Messages” tab on the web platform provides access to the full DM inbox, a “Requests” section for incoming message requests, message search, and the ability to start new chats. This brings the desktop experience closer in line with competitors such as X and Bluesky.
Web messaging was the most requested feature following the initial launch of direct messages on Threads in July 2025. Hayes noted that many of the platform’s most active users spend time on the web during longer sessions at their desks. “A conversation app needs to work wherever you are, and now it does,” he stated.
Since introducing DMs, messaging activity on Threads has grown steadily. The company reported a 30% increase in messages sent per week since the beginning of 2026, with users now sending around 350 million DMs weekly.
The addition of web messaging continues Threads’ efforts to expand beyond its original text-based feed format. The platform, which launched without native direct messaging in 2023, has steadily added conversational tools to increase engagement.
