Threads Further Expands Topic-Based Communities
Threads is pushing further into interest-driven conversations with a new expansion of its topic-based Communities, as Meta continues to position the app as a hub for real-time discussion and in-depth dialogue. First announced in September and rolled out widely in October, Threads Communities were designed to help users easily find and join groups centered on shared interests. Now, the feature is getting a significant upgrade.
The most notable change is scale. Threads has expanded its list of available Communities from around 100 to more than 200 popular interest areas. This broader range gives users more opportunities to connect with others who share their passions, from entertainment and books to sports, technology, and niche hobbies. By making interest alignment more visible, Threads hopes to encourage users to stay active and post more frequently within relevant spaces.
Alongside the expansion, Threads is testing new “Community Champion” badges. These badges will highlight highly followed and influential members within each Community, making it easier for users to identify key voices and trusted contributors. For those selected as Champions, the badge also serves as an incentive to continue driving discussion and shaping conversations within their topic areas. The feature is currently being tested with a limited group of users, with plans for a wider rollout over time.
Threads is also experimenting with Community flair, a simple labeling system that allows members to showcase the specific aspects of a topic they’re most interested in. For example, users in a book-related Community might display their favorite genre next to their posts. Flair options are set by Community Champions, and selected labels will appear on all posts within that space, adding more context and personality to discussions.
