TikTok Rolls Out “Nearby Feed” in Europe for Local Discovery

TikTok has officially launched its “Nearby Feed” across the U.K., France, Germany and Italy – a new feature designed to highlight public posts from users in close geographical proximity, aiming to turn the app into a more locally useful discovery tool. This doesn’t just mean local content, but also a local marketing tool, given TikTok’s prevalence in the modern marketing world.

The Nearby feed appears as a new tab on the home screen, though its label changes to match the user’s current location rather than simply stating “Nearby.” According to TikTok, the feed surfaces content based on three main factors: where posts are made, the topic of the posts – such as food, events, travel or services – and how recently they were uploaded. Users may also optionally share precise location data via GPS to refine local recommendations.

From a consumer standpoint, this update offers a way to rediscover neighbourhood culture or find new local venues – creating a dynamic alternative to traditional search tools like Google Maps or Yelp. For example, users might stumble upon nearby restaurants, events, markets or hidden local businesses, with content coming from creators who’ve tagged their posts with relevant locations. The idea isn’t entirely new: TikTok reportedly tested a similar feature in Southeast Asia back in 2022.

For creators, local businesses, and marketers, the Nearby feed opens fresh opportunities. Public posts tagged with a city or service can reach people within walking or commuting distance — giving small businesses a kind of organic hyperlocal reach that blends social media visibility with foot-traffic potential. As TikTok puts it, the feed is meant to help users “discover what’s happening close to them, from local creators and trending spots to everyday moments that reflect their community.
