Tinder and Zoom to Integrate World ID Eye-Scanning

Tinder and Zoom have partnered with World to offer users the option to verify their identity through iris scanning, providing a “proof of humanity” badge to combat fake profiles and deepfakes.

The technology uses an iris scan – either through a smartphone app or a physical orb-shaped device – to confirm that a user is a real person rather than an AI-generated or bot account. Once verified, users receive a unique World ID code stored on their device, which can then be linked to their Tinder or Zoom profile.

Tinder introduced mandatory video selfie verification last year to reduce bots and romance scams. The addition of World ID is described by Yoel Roth, Match Group’s head of trust and safety, as a “natural next step” to help users confirm the person on the other end is real. Naturally, for a dating app, this level of verification could be an incredibly effective tool for keeping scam and spam accounts out of your swiping rotation – but may be seen as a huge privacy and data risk by a subset of users.

Zoom, meanwhile, is implementing the feature primarily to counter increasingly sophisticated deepfakes in video calls, particularly in professional settings. In 2024, a Hong Kong worker was scammed out of $25 million after interacting with deepfake videos impersonating company executives. Deloitte estimates that deepfake-related financial fraud in the US could reach $40 billion by 2027.

The integration was announced during a live event in San Francisco on April 15, 2026. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who co-founded Tools for Humanity (the company behind World), briefly addressed the audience, noting that AI-generated content is rapidly increasing online and that reliable ways to distinguish humans from AI will become essential.

World has verified 18 million people so far, with the ID used 450 million times. The company emphasizes that the scan is anonymous and does not require sharing personal information such as name or address. While the feature is optional, it originates from growing industry efforts to address AI-driven threats on dating and communication platforms.
