Tinder Tests Missed Connections and Text-Based Search Features
Tinder is testing two new features aimed at helping users find potential matches more efficiently and connect online interactions with real-world encounters.
During Match Group’s second-quarter earnings call, Tinder CEO Spencer Rascoff said the dating app is testing a feature called Missed Connections in Canada and Australia. The feature surfaces a curated selection of profiles in a dedicated tab based on people users may have crossed paths with during the previous week.
The test is part of Tinder’s broader effort to encourage more connections outside the app. The company recently expanded its Events feature into additional cities after initially testing it in Los Angeles. Tinder has said younger users are interested in meeting through shared activities, while the transition from matching online to meeting in person can remain a challenge.
Rascoff also said artificial intelligence was used throughout the development of Missed Connections, allowing the team to move from concept to product testing in a matter of weeks rather than months.
Separately, Tinder is testing a text-based Search feature in Canada. The tool is designed to allow users to search for people they may be interested in rather than relying solely on the app’s recommendation system. About 10% of users participating in the test have submitted a search, with tens of thousands of searches generated during the first few weeks.
The developments come as Tinder continues to work on its recommendation algorithms and user engagement. The company recently updated its algorithm for straight women, which Match Group said contributed to improvements in metrics tracking six-way conversations and the proportion of users experiencing those interactions. The updates are now being expanded to straight men and LGBTQ users.
