Tokyo Government Dating App Reaches 265 Marriages Formed
An AI-powered dating app launched by the Tokyo metropolitan government has resulted in 265 marriages since its introduction in September 2024, according to official data.
The platform, TOKYO Enmusubi, was created to address Japan’s persistently low birth rate by helping people who expressed interest in marriage but were not actively seeking partners. A pre-launch survey indicated that around 70 percent of those interested in marriage were not engaged in matchmaking activities.
To focus the user base on individuals seeking long-term relationships, applicants must demonstrate that they are legally single and complete an online interview, among other requirements. Of approximately 36,000 people who applied, 16,000 had been accepted as registered members by 30 June 2026. At that date the app recorded 760 couples in serious relationships and 265 who had married.
One user, identified by the government under the pseudonym “Turtle,” described joining the app as she approached her 40th birthday. After several dates she met her future husband at the end of August, entered a serious relationship in mid-September and accepted a proposal at the end of December.
The initiative comes against a backdrop of continuing demographic decline. Official figures released in June showed that 671,236 babies were born to Japanese nationals in 2025, a new record low and the tenth consecutive annual decrease. Deaths that year totalled 1.6 million. The national fertility rate edged down by 0.01 percentage points to 1.14, although the number of marriages rose slightly.
TOKYO Enmusubi remains a local government programme rather than a commercial platform. Its results to date indicate that a portion of users have progressed from registration to marriage within the first two years of operation, though the absolute numbers remain modest relative to Japan’s overall population and marriage trends. This could be a sign that Japan – or, at least, Tokyo – would respond well to other platforms that are designed to nudgeu sers into marriage, rather than just dates.
