WhatsApp Adds Group Chat Roles, Stickers and Reminders
WhatsApp has introduced a new set of features aimed at improving how users organize and interact within group chats, reflecting the continued shift toward private messaging as a primary form of social engagement. The updates, announced this week, add role-based profile tags, expanded sticker creation tools, and enhanced event reminders to group conversations.
The changes arrive as messaging apps increasingly become substitutes for public social media feeds. Many users now prefer smaller, closed groups to share updates and coordinate plans, a trend driven in part by fatigue with public posting and concerns about negativity and visibility. WhatsApp’s latest additions are designed to make group chats more structured, expressive, and practical for everyday use.
One of the most notable updates is the introduction of customizable role tags within group chats. These tags allow users to define how they appear in a specific group, offering contextual clarity without changing their broader profile. As WhatsApp explains: “We all wear different hats and sometimes you want to give that more context in a group chat. Now you can give yourself a tag that tells the group what your role is, and can be customized for each group you’re in. So you can be ‘Anna’s Dad’ in one group, and ‘Goalkeeper’ in another.” The feature is intended to help groups quickly identify members’ roles, whether for family chats, sports teams, or community groups.
WhatsApp is also expanding its sticker functionality by allowing users to create text-based stickers directly from typed words. According to the company, “You can now turn any word into a sticker by typing your text into Sticker Search. You can also add newly created stickers directly to your sticker packs instead of having to send them in a chat first.” This update lowers the barrier to creating personalized stickers and encourages more expressive communication within chats.
In addition, WhatsApp has enhanced its group event tools with customizable reminder notifications. “Now when you create and send an event in your group chat you can set custom early reminders for your invitees,” the company said, noting that the feature is designed to help participants remember upcoming in-person or virtual events.
