Watch This Excellent Presentation On The State Of Design In Tech

Design In Tech

At SXSW last week, design authority John Maeda, the former VP of design at VC firm Kleiner Perkins, presented his third Design In Tech report.

Inspired by Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends Report, Maeda’s talk aims to encapsulate the current state of design, and its impact on the world of tech.

Maeda came up with the idea for the report after watching Meeker deliver her Internet Trends presentation while working at Kleiner Perkins, and noticing that “the word “design” wasn’t used explicitly, and instead “experience” or “UI” were what was paving the path to a win.”

So, Maeda said he saw an opportunity to “clarify how designers and design play a role in businesses of all scale and especially in the technology industry”, and set about creating the first Design in Tech report.

Now in its third year, Maeda – who currently works as Global Head of Computational Design at Automattic – delivered the talk at SXSW, and has made it available to watch online.

Some of the key takeaways of the hour-long presentation include that design is now being considered with much more importance – becoming a priority for everyone from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses.

As Maeda explains: “When a technology matures, that’s when design becomes especially relevant as the differentiating factor. That time, for tech, is now.”

This movement is happening from the bottom up, with design moving further into the curriculum at business schools, a change “driven by market demand” and one that will influence the next generation of business leaders.
