Grindr has shared its Unwrapped report, a review of the dating trends and pop culture moments that defined gay dating in 2023.
Grindr, one of the world’s largest dating & social apps for the gay community, has shared a round up of insights and trends from its users as they reflect on 2023. Here are a few of those data points:
Activity on Grindr
The Unwrapped report states that Grindr saw 13 billion ‘taps’ sent during 2023, and that the platform’s peak time for activity was Sundays at 6pm. Overall, the dating app saw 100 billion chats sent.
Grindr allows users to create private albums on their profile, with 1 billion of these albums shared during the course of the year. Users in Kuwait recorded the highest percentage of albums shared, followed by Portugal, Qatar, Ireland, and Greece.
The most common profile tags displayed were ‘discreet’, ‘bi’, ‘fwb’, ‘kissing’, and ‘anon’. However, the most commonly searched tags were ‘hung’, ‘trans’, ‘bb’, ‘dom’, and ‘feet’.
Dating trends
Grindr’s Unwrapped report also documented the popular trends and preferences among users, sharing which countries saw the highest number of individuals within these groups.
South Korea ranked number 1 among countries with the highest percentage of bottoms, followed by Japan and Vietnam. On the reverse, Trinidad & Tobago, Kenya, and China, saw the highest number of tops.
The United Kingdom saw the highest percentage of users with ‘vanilla’ in their profile tags, followed by Australia and New Zealand. Singapore saw the highest percentage of ‘sides’, someone who prefers other forms of sexual activity over penetrative anal sex.
When asked if they’re interested in NSFW (Not Safe For Work) pictures, Grindr users in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, India, and Italy were the most likely to say no. On the other hand, users in the U.S.,Canada, Finland, Australia, and Norway were the most likely to say yes.
When it comes to open relationships, South Korea, Nigeria, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Switzerland saw the highest percentage of those dating non-monogamously. The Netherlands saw the highest percentage of twinks, followed by Belgium and Brazil.
Pop culture moments
What did Grindr users think about the world of pop culture and celebrities in 2023? All importantly, a definitive list of 2023’s hottest men was drawn up. Superman actor Henry Cavill came out in the top spot, followed by musician Lil Nas X and Troye Sivan.
The show that Grindr users loved the most in 2023 was Heartstopper, a coming-of-age story of young lovers Charlie and Nick. Other popular TV programmes were White Lotus, Drag Race, and The Last of Us.
Among the top films of the year, Grindr users picked Barbie as their number one pick for 2023. This was followed by Red, White & Royal Blue, as well as Oppenheimer and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.
