A new dating app that launched last week wants to be Tinder but without the “serious” daters.
Casualx is an iOS app that openly describes itself as a “casual sex app”, promising to be a safe and trusted “alternative to Craiglist” for casual encounters.
The founder of the service, Casualx CEO Michelle Li, said she wanted to build the app after friends expressed difficulty creating solely-casual relationships on apps like Tinder, as many users are looking for something more serious.
So, Li decided to create Casualx, a dating app solely focused on bringing together people who are looking for something casual.
Li said: “Those who use Tinder to find partners for casual sex with no strings attached often find the experience confusing and frustrating when they are matched with people who are looking for serious relationships.
“There should be a pure hookup app to weed out marriage-minded daters, which can save time for people seeking a simple hookup.”
The app works in a very similar way to Tinder: using a swipe-based system, people can see a photo of a potential match and some basic information about them, such as their age and location.
Members can then swipe through potential matches and choose left for no and right for yes – if both people swipe right they match and talk.
Users can also upload “moments” to their profile, which could be photos or written updates, for potential matches to view.
Casualx also says that its team vets every profile on the app and the platform offers a number of security features to help singles conceal their private lives more efficiently.
For example, the app lets its members set an unlock pattern for the app, preventing others from accessing their account, and also offers private albums.

The product’s App Store listing explains more: “Are you looking for hookup sites like Craigslist personals for casual encounters or apps like Tinder for casual sex?
“Now, you have come to the right place! As a Tinder and Craigslist alternative, Casualx only caters to the people who are looking for casual sexual encounters with no strings attached.
“Here you can meet couples and singles to have one night stands, friends with benefits, extramarital affairs, swinging or any other type of casual sexual relationship without commitment and emotional attachment.”
Considering this explicitly adult-orientated language, it’s a surprise that Casualx was admitted to the App Store, as previous apps like Pure who attempted similar strategies were blocked by Apple, and forced to release a more PG version.
Although there is a free version of Casualx, users can only message other members by buying a premium subscription.
Subscription prices start at $14.99 for one month, $35.99 for three months and $54.99 for six months.
It is also worth noting that Casualx’s App Store listing says it is available for users who are “at least 17 years old”.
From its beta version, Casualx claimed it attracted over 50,000 users, and made 1,000 matches every day.
The app is now available for iOS users globally and is expected to launch for Android soon.
