Southern Illinois is hosting a ‘Tinder Night’ when they play Missouri State on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day).
It is a promotion to try and get college students in the basketball stand, and to have them leave with a match.
SIU’s Athletics Marketing Director Marissa Poppe said: “Students are encouraged to swipe right at the Valentine’s Day game. If you match with another student, SIU will have a “Meet Your Match Lounge” where the potential couple can meet. The lounge will feature cocktail tables, fake roses, breath mints and name tags in a quiet location for conversation.”
She added: “It’s pretty low-key. You can go up there and have a conversation. If it goes well, you can go back into the game and enjoy the rest of the game with your match.”
If something was to happen on one of the encounters, SIU will have a phone number that students can text “Save Me” and the Saluki mascot ‘Grey Dawg’ will come and save you from the date.

Poppe added: “You’re around a bunch of people and everything’s out in the open. We’re not trying to promote anything inappropriate.”
The idea apparently came from the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks who hosted a Swipe Right Nights with Tinder as the theme, with the Hawks even paying for one of the couple’s weddings who met at the promotion.
