Texas Act Pushes Stronger Age Verification on Dating Apps

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily permitted Texas to implement its App Store Accountability Act (ASAA), a law requiring stricter age verification and parental consent for app downloads. The ruling, issued in late May 2026, allows the measure to proceed while legal challenges continue, though the court noted the decision is interim.

Under the ASAA, minors in Texas must link their Apple or Google accounts to a parent’s for monitoring downloads and purchases. Developers must clearly label apps by target age group, including categories for children under 13, teens 13-15, older teens 16-17, or adults over 18. The law aims to protect minors from adult content and potential online predators, particularly on dating platforms.

A federal judge had previously blocked the ASAA, citing First Amendment concerns and comparing it to mandatory age checks at bookstores. The appeals court’s reversal signals a shift toward prioritizing child safety. Similar laws in Louisiana, Utah, and California have passed but are not yet active.

For dating apps, the ruling could significantly impact user acquisition and onboarding. Platforms may face increased friction at the app store level, where age verification and parental consent occur before users reach the app itself. This could reduce impulse sign-ups and require adjustments to marketing, verification processes, and user flow. While dating apps aren’t going to be targeting those under the age of 18 in almost all cases, the extra hurdles could lessen the pool of users that are able or willing to verify their ID just to install a dating app.

While stronger verification may limit underage access to adult apps, critics worry about privacy, parental overreach, and barriers to educational or social content. Dating apps have faced ongoing criticism for inadequate age controls and instances of minors interacting with adults. If the ASAA becomes permanent, it could set a precedent for other states and reshape how dating platforms handle age assurance.
