Tinder Rolls Out Mandatory Face Verification for New Users in India

Tinder is introducing a new layer of security for its users in India, requiring all new members to complete a mandatory video selfie before they can begin matching. The company says the new Face Check feature is designed to combat fake accounts, bots, and romance scams, while giving users greater confidence that they are interacting with real people.

The process uses video-based “liveness checks” to confirm that a user’s face matches their uploaded photos and that the same face is not being used across multiple accounts. Once verified, users receive a Photo Verified badge on their profile – a visible signal of authenticity meant to boost trust on the platform.

The rollout follows an initial launch in California earlier this year and is now being expanded to new users across India, one of Tinder’s largest and fastest-growing markets. The company says the feature is part of its broader investment in user safety and authenticity measures. The update comes amid growing concern over online dating scams in India. Cybercrime agencies have warned of rising cases of identity theft and fraudulent dating profiles used to extort money or personal information. By introducing mandatory verification, Tinder aims to make it more difficult for scammers to operate on the app.

“Face Check is arriving in India at a time when online authenticity has never been more important,” said Yoel Roth, Senior Vice President of Trust & Safety at Match Group, Tinder’s parent company. “Safety features like Face Check add an important new tool to our arsenal against fake profiles, bots, and fraud so that people can focus on building meaningful connections.”
