AI-Driven Romance Scams on the Rise, McAfee Report Warns

As online dating continues to grow, so do the risks of deception. A new McAfee report highlights the increasing threat of AI-driven romance scams, revealing that one in four people (26%) have encountered an AI chatbot posing as a real person on dating platforms or social media. Even more concerning, 76% believe scammers can easily use AI to manipulate victims emotionally or financially – and 1 in 3 feel that they would fall for a chatbot if given the opportunity.

The research also shows that romance scams are becoming more sophisticated and widespread. McAfee blocked over 321,500 fraudulent URLs related to romance scams in just seven weeks, with fake dating apps also playing a major role. Nearly 11,000 attempts were made to download fraudulent dating apps, with Tinder and OkCupid being the most imitated platforms.

Financial losses are another growing concern. More than half (52%) of online daters have been scammed or pressured into sending money or gifts. Among those targeted by impersonators, 33% lost money, with victims reporting an average loss of nearly $2,000. Some scammers are using deepfake technology to pose as celebrities, tricking one in five (21%) social media users into believing they were speaking with a famous figure.

With AI making scams harder to detect, cybersecurity experts stress the need for vigilance. Warning signs include unwillingness to video chat, overly generic messages, and sudden requests for money. Experts recommend verifying identities, being cautious with personal information, and never sending money to online acquaintances.

While the rise of scams is always a bad thing, it also provides opportunities for dating platforms to educate users more reliably. Scams are a constant arms race between scammers and genuine dating platforms, and with Valentine’s Day only two more days away, it seems likely that various platfoms will be pouring effort into warning users of the potential risks – or introducing safety measures similar to Tinder’s major overhaul of anti-scam features late last year.
